Meredith TP #13

I met with Yujeong at Starbucks and before we met up she told me that she wanted to go over passive and active voice. It is not something she is studying in class, but an outside interest, which I was impressed with. She was unsure overall of the differences/ and usage of the two voices, so we went over that for a while. I showed her how active voice is used much more often than passive voice. Passive voice is generally clunkier and harder to understand. We went over comparisons of the same sentence in active and passive voice. I showed her that the main point is the switch of the subject and direct object within the sentence. She seemed to pick it up pretty quickly, so I had her practice on her own. She switched sentences from active to passive and passive to active very easily. I emphasized the usage of active voice, because many of the sentences in passive voice we changed sounded very awkward.
After that lesson she had a question about the cashier at Publix. When they ask, "Did you find everything okay?" she was never sure what they meant. She said they spoke too fast and was unable to understand; she thought they might be asking if she was okay. So I explained their question and the typical response/ conversation that people have with cashiers.
After that we went over some verb tenses as well, specifically past perfect and present perfect and practiced examples for a while. Understanding the more arcane verb tenses is definitely what challenges her.
