Briggs TP #1

I met with my child tutee, P.J. for the first time. P.J's mother told me that two areas we needed to focus on in P.J's studies were, reading and reading comprehension. As such, for our first lesson, we read a book about space travel and astronauts. P.J. picked the book out and the subject was of interest to him. As he read the book aloud, we were able to discuss the photos in the book; many of which were possible new vocabulary words. Since it was our first session, I was getting a feel for his level of comprehension. He reads very well and needs very little correction in his pronunciation.  As we read, I asked him about the astronauts, space travel, rockets, and the space station, checking for comprehension but also getting to know P.J. better along the way. The book contained many photos of the topic, and provided us a chance to discuss new vocabulary.
