Briggs TP#5
For this session, P.J. and I went over some mistakes from his school work. The homework covered the subjects of bullying and volcanoes. We re-read the passages together and went over the errant answers to comprehension questions. As we covered the topics, I realized that P.J. understood the passages well but had an issue when summary questions were asked such as, "what is the main idea of this article?" I began to teach P.J. some test taking strategies. I related with him and told him I could understand why he picked the wrong answer (as the certain topic was thoroughly covered in the text). We discussed the correct answer and why it was a better fit as a summary. As we went over the homework, we continued this discussion. For the last five minutes of the lesson we played a game called 'word crack.' This is a vocabulary building game where one must identify as many words as possible in the time allotted. At the end of the game, we reviewed the words he 'got' as well as the other possible word combinations. P.J. quite enjoyed this game.
