Tutoring Session # 8
During this afternoon’s session with Hector we focused on modals
used for ability, potential, obligation, and permission. A particular challenge
lay in the overlapping of many of the words (i.e. can/could and may/might).
Because Hector had already done quite a few clozed exercises on these topics, I
organized the lesson to focus on using them more in speech, so the focus topics
were our childhoods and weekend/future plans. I made sure to model start the
conversations first to model the usage of each modal, and Hector would reply
with an equivalent statement about himself.
Ex:
- I have to go to the grocery store later. I can’t make dinner
without a few things.
- I have to study later, because I have a quiz.
- When?
- This week.
I performed error correction in two ways: the first time a mistake
was made with a specific modal, I would repeat the sentence and emphasize the
mistake until it was corrected. After that, if the same modal was misused, I
used the “what?” method of correction.
The second half of the session we worked on writing with modals. The
topic was again our weekly obligations, and life at school. I set a timer for
seven minutes and we both wrote as much as possible. Since this wasn’t the
first time we had done an exercise like this, I didn’t have to explain much.
We read through both at the end and corrected any errors dealing
with modals and basic verb tenses.
I think this tutoring session has been one of the smoothest so far
in terms of my imagining of how the time would be used.
