Briggs TP#11
Santiago and I continued our conversation about the outdoors, and the abundances of places to hike in Tallahassee. He proceeded to tell me about a hiking trip he had taken the week prior. We then boarded a boat to tour the Wakulla river. One of the TEFL students stood at the front of the boat, opened his arms, and said, "I'm the king of the world, titanic, you know?" Santiago, me and some of the other students chuckled. As the boat passed the wildlife, I pointed out the snake bird. I explained that they are archaic birds that were around when the dinosaurs were here. They have to spread their wings in order to dry them because they aren't equipped with oil on their feathers (unlike present day birds). I corrected his errors in speech throughout our session. I utilized circumlocution and modeling to explain the the word, 'wooly mammoth' and other Jurassic vocabulary. One thing that really impresses me about Santiago is that when I politely interject to provide error correction, he doesn't skip a beat! He repeats my correction, and continues with his discussion. Lastly, we discussed the wooly mammoth that lies at the mouth of the spring. He looked at me incredulously, "Really?!" We then began to talk about dinosaurs, the movie, 'Jurassic Park', and how birds evolved into dinosaurs. I added that I thought pelicans are our modern day pterodactyls. He wasn't so sure : )
