I met yesterday with Dalal for our last tutoring session. She gave me back my book, Tales of Beetle the Bard, from the Harry Potter series. I had to try to explain to her again how it is a book within a book, which I know can be very confusing. She didn't read very much of it, and I wasn't sure whether it was because she just doesn't like to read or if it was because she doesn't like fantasy type books. I asked her and she wasn't very clear, but I do think it is a little bit of both. She didn't know a ton of the words from the book, because they're made up and magical. It must be very difficult reading and not understanding the words, and therefore not understanding the page and the chapter. She said she does read online articles and journals, but they are scholarly and about information, not fiction. I think she prefers material like this. Dalal also brought with her a practice test for the IELETS for reading. I had her start doing it and I just watched so I could check her comprehension at the end. We went over all the big words she did not understand and I tried my best to explain them to her. When going over the questions, she did actually know the answers, but she struggles a lot because she doesn't know every word and therefore loses the meaning. I can understand how frustrating that must be. I gave her as much advice for studying and taking practice exams in the future, as well as timing practice for the real exam. I think she will definitely improve her score the next time she takes it!
