Elyce CO #1

Today I observed Felicia's group 3A reading class. I went into the observation not really knowing what to expect, because I had never observed a CIES class before. Felicia was very nice, and I joined two other observers from other programs in the back of the classroom.

The main thing I noticed about this classroom observation was Felicia's speech rate. I know that CIES teachers are supposed to speak slow, but I had not expected the rate of speech to be as slow as Felicia's. Felicia began the class by having them read an article, which happened to be on american culture. Then she had the talk aloud about the content of the article. I noticed that she would say everything twice, which was very helpful for the students because it helped them better understand their task at hand. After the students discussed the article, they answered a series of questions on it. They then split into groups, and Felicia delegated me and the other observers into groups with the students. I really liked this because it made me feel like a part of the class! Together, the students and I reviewed the questions and talked about the article. After that the class was finished!

Observing Felicia's class was very interesting! I was surprised at her speaking rate, but also at the level of English that the students possessed. They spoke a lot better than I expected them to!
