Today in Ramin’s speaking class, my group learned that we
interpreted the instructions from last week a little bit incorrectly. We
thought that everyone would be actually working on the boards today, but we
were just supposed to be figuring out what we wanted on out boards and how we
would lay it out. We had already been in contact with each other and typed up all
our materials, and I printed them out before class and brought
scissors/glue/card stock so we could put it together. So I guess we were a
little ahead of the game?
We started putting our board together in the kitchen, and
Alycia put on some music. While we worked on the board, we discussed some cognates
and funny false cognates between Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The one that
stuck out the most to me was “embarazada,” the Spanish word for pregnant. In Portuguese
the word for pregnant is “gravida,” but the word equivalent to the English “embarrassed”
is “embaraçado,” which Johanna explained as having a “messy haired feeling.”
By the end of class, we had almost finished putting our
board together. Because Ramin was giving the class time to put together boards
on Wednesday, I think it was lucky that we did ours today, because I have class
at this time on Wednesdays. I offered to stop by on another day to help finish
up the last parts of the board.
Next week, the whole class will present our
posters/tri-folds so we can all compare customs.
