Briggs TP#2
P.J. had a book from class with several stories. I know P.J. takes music lessons and listening to music is one of my favorite pastimes; so I choose a section on Ludwig Beethoven. The text covered Beethoven's life from childhood to adulthood. For the schema building exercise, I choose a 5 minute animated video which covered the life of Beethoven, especially his childhood, which was of great focus in the reading. The video covered many of the same themes as the text so it was a nice warm-up exercise. I prepared comprehension questions and vocabulary words to review. As he read along, I asked him vocabulary comprehension questions. At the end of the lesson, I told him I had prepared a couple of questions to review together. "Review together" being the key word phrase here. This went over much better than coldly proceeding to the questions at the end of the lesson. P.J. is very smart but he doesn't like to be questioned as if he doesn't know the response. The less I could make it seem that I was 'testing' him, the better the message was received.
