Yesterday i met with Meredith and Yujeong to observe their tutoring session. Meredith planned a lesson on Passive and Active voice. Meredith began by explaining how active is used more and passive is harder to understand. Yujeong was very embarrassed and shy but also seemed excited to meet me. Meredith used examples and brought a list of many different sentences. She explained active first and said how it is more about the subject. I think she did a really good job of explaining, Yujeong explained it back to her so she definitely understood. She was very silly and fun. Meredith drew arrows to help explain passive/active sentences visually as well. Yujeong was confused on tenses in regards to the different voices, but Meredith did a good job of explaining and setting her straight. Yujeong asked a lot of examples of if passive/active voice is used, like in newspapers, speaking, in papers, etc. Meredith looked up a few examples to use from online and had her rewrite them from active to passive, and vice versa. Yujeong got confused when it was six shrimp, instead of six shrimps. Meredith had to explain how many animals are like that, like deer, fish, moose, etc. Yujeong was asking a question but then she forgot a word, and used her phone to google translate the word from her language into english. She did it incredibly quickly and then asked her question again, this time using the word “emphasize”, which is the one she found online. They talked for a while about casual conversations between a cashier (like at Starbucks) and the customer. She wasn’t sure about a few phrases, like did you find everything “smoothly” like she said. Meredith explained really well what was typically said by cashiers and how American customers typically reply. Yujeong asked for how to say, “I’m looking forward to meeting you, nice to meet you, I’m excited to meet you…”, and phrases like that also. She spent the rest of the time going over the different tenses, specifically on the Past Perfect. Yujeong was having a hard time with it, but we both tried explaining and I think she got it by the end. Meredith did a great job in her tutoring session and I am really glad I was able to observe, especially because I have never taught an adult from South Korea one-on-one before.
