Meredith TP #14

I met with Yujeong at Dunkin Donuts, like usual, and we discussed her goals for the rest of the semester. The end of the CIES is close and after next session she is going back to South Korea. Unlike many CIES students she is not wishing to continue school at Florida State. She wants to learn English so she can put it as a skill on her resume. This is why she is very curious about slang and informal English; unlike other CIES students whose primary use for English is academic, most of her English use will be in day-to-day life, and therefore, informal.
I think having the book, The Fault in Our Stars, is very helpful then. Because although it is a book, it is a fiction novel about teenagers, thus the language is very casual. So, after discussing Yujeong's future plans we read The Fault in Our Stars. This kind of reading is definitely foreign to her, however she did a really great job. Many of the things that she tripped up on were specific vocabulary words or phrase, rather than understanding ideas as a whole. Words like: "in the winter," "treatment," "sacred," and more. The protagonist has cancer, so much of the vocab in general was related to that.
