On February 20th, I met my tutee Rasmane for the last time on campus at the Chick-fil-a, right before it closed. It was extremely loud (because they were cleaning) so we basically had to shout to study. As I promised him last time, we would discuss resumes. Coincidentally, I had made a lesson plan about resume making, so I was semi-prepared. I asked him what kind of jobs he has worked before, the name of the establishment/companies, his job title/position, start and end date/duration, and what exactly he did. In order to model, I used a Chick-fil-a employee, saying this person, John Smith, started working here exactly 3 months and one week ago (and had him tell me what date that would have been). John Smith is a dishwasher for the company, but he also cleans tables, sanitizes his work area, and takes out the trash. I explained on a resume he would write: "John Smith, Chick-fil-a Dishwasher from November 13, 2014 to present. Bullet-pointed tasks: clearing and washing dishes, sanitizing the work area, maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen, removing waste from the restaurant, training new employees." This was to give him a model of "power words," which look very good on a resume when describing previous jobs. I had Rasmane explain in detail all of these points, and then we crafted a basic resume together. He worked as a dishwasher in Petit House for one year and one month--he had a lot of trouble differentiating 2014 and 2013, and kept saying he started work in December 2014--as well as a controller for three groups in a construction company. He had some trouble explaining what an "implant builder" was (there was a lot of construction jargon that I did not know, so I was not useful there), but I tried my best to understand and help. After, I told him to take this rough draft to the career center on campus, as they would help him perfect the form so he can look for a job while in Tallahassee.
