During my fifth tutoring session with PJ we read two books on motocross racing. They were not very advanced books, in that there were not many words per page, and there were a lot of pictures. Despite this though, they contained a decent amount of vocabulary that PJ did not know. They were also books that definitely kept his interest which is really important for him. Reading with intrinsic motivation is so important for him, because PJ is not a big fan of reading. The pictures in the book also provided a schema, so he was able to see an example of everything he read on the next page over.
During reading we talked a little bit about motocross racing, outside of the text, to raise his interest in it even further. The two books were not long, so we had a little time at the end of the session and were able to play hangman again. He beat me.. again.
