I tutored PJ on February 5th, which was a Thursday, because I was going to be out of town that weeekend when I usually tutor him. Our session was in a CIES classroom and we worked on a reading passage from his booklet. The passage was actually one of Aesop's fables. Since it was a fable I was easily able to find a video online of the story and that was what we watched before we read. As he was reading I made a list of the words he did not know, and the list was longer than I expected it to be. I think it was definitely a harder passage. However, when it came to the questions he did pretty well. The questions he usually struggles with are main idea/ summarization questions and this time was no different.
The writers of these questions definitely make the questions tricky. He often goes for a question that summarizes an aspect of the passage, but not the entire thing. It's a common mistake though. The one question we disagreed on though was an opinion question. It had to do with what PJ thought would happen after the story, and no matter what I said he was very adamant about his answer even though I knew it was wrong.
Despite these hiccups, he is definitely improving. I can tell he is not only absorbing more, but trying more when doing this work. It's nice to see.
