Katelyn_TP_#9
I met my child tutee Zoe at her house on February 5th. We chatted about her science fair--the reason we didn't have a session the previous week--and she said it was a lot of fun. Then we went immediately into her reading comprehension books. Zoe picked the topics, as I wanted her to do something she was interested in; we read about painted flowers on coffee filters and a classroom situation involving this craft. Zoe had to identify the correct order of steps, and define people by their actions--she did well, but often makes "their/there/they're" mistakes in her writing. I feel that sometimes she's too eager to give a response and writes her answers without thinking about what she's actually doing. I'm trying to get her to give her answers out loud before she writes them down to slow her down a little bit. We also discussed the difference between opinions and facts, and she had to say why it was one or the other. She's truly a smart kid, and her English is honestly about the same level as any 8-year old American child (in my opinion!). Then she read the book Owl Moon to me--we practiced making owl hoots with our hands--while I asked her comprehensive questions. It was a fun lesson for the both of us. I know that Zoe loves to read books, so she really enjoys this kind of activity.
