During this session with Claire we started out by going over one of Claire's worksheets that she did in school that day. The worksheet went over words that end in "y" and how to add endings like ies, ied, and ing. Claire and I thought of additional words other than the ones provided on her worksheet. Claire demonstrated great skill while going over this worksheet.
After that, Claire and I read a book on Thomas Edison. While reading this book, we focused on comprehension and summarizing what we read. After each page, Claire and I went over what she just learned about Thomas Edison. When reading past books, Claire has had troubles reading and then retelling the story. But, while reading this book, Claire was able to remember exactly what happened in the book. She gave great summaries of what happened on each page and learned a lot about Thomas Edison. In our earlier tutoring sessions we had worked on reading non-fiction. At the end of the book Claire was able to state lots of inventions that Thomas Edison created, facts about his life, and even learned new vocabulary.
