Today I observed Catherine tutoring her child tutee. Catherine started off her session by asking Yunseo how school was and discussing Valentines Day. They then watched a Clifford the Big Red Dog video where Yunseo read along on a script provided by Catherine. The script had a few missing words that Yunseo had to fill in by listening to the video. This dictation activity helped Yunseo spell new words, practice reading, and enhance listening skills. Throughout the dictation activity, Catherine asked Yunseo to sound out words in order to spell them properly. They also re-watched the video a few times together in order for Yunseo to fill in all the blanks in the script.
After watching the video and filling out the script, Catherine and Yunseo each wrote as many sentences as they could in 3 min. The sentences were to be written about the video they just watched. Catherine told Yunseo that she should write as much as possible and not focus on spelling. During this activity, Catherine purposely spelled words wrong so that Yunseo could correct them. Yunseo had a little trouble with this activity because instead of writing, she would talk to Catherine. However, Catherine did a very good job of redirecting her towards the activity.
During their last activity, Catherine and Yunseo read a book about Thomas Edison together. Catherine would read parts of the book to her and ask her simple comprehension questions to see if she understood what Catherine was reading. This activity was both a listening and a speaking activity, since they switched off reading pages.
Overall I think Catherine and Yunseo had a great tutoring session. Each activity was age appropriate. Catherine even incorporated culture into her lesson by discussing Valentine's day and they learned about Thomas Edison. Catherine's comprehension question about the book and video were also very appropriate and helped Yunseo demonstrate what she had learned from each. Catherine also wrote out the same sentences that Yunseo wrote out which I felt lowered her effective filters and made the tutoring session easier and more fun!
