On Wednesday I tutored Maria. We spent the majority of the time looking over a paper she had written. She did not have that many mistakes but I still took a while going over everything and writing down all the grammar rules for her. It seems that one of her biggest things is subject verb agreement. I told her that whenever she sees subjects, she should replace it with the pronoun in her head and then decide which verb to use. I do this in French and it’s very helpful. For example, in “my mom and I (to go) to the store”,  the student might be become overwhelmed with choosing the right verb, but if they think of it in terms of just “we”, it becomes a bit simpler.

When I was tutoring Maria, my friend Vanessa happened to be at Starbucks also. Vanessa has been the states for a while, but is also from Bogota, Colombia, like Maria. I was really happy that they were able to meet. Vanessa is going to help Maria with her English and be a conversation partner for her. I hope that I am giving Maria enough encouragement, it seems like it can be so tiring to study a language so intensely. Hopefully she and Eduardo will both do well on their final exams!
