I met Young-Seo for our weekly meeting today at the Leon
Public Library. Her mother had requested that I work with her on her
kindergarten vocabulary list. I made a little spelling quiz for her, since I
know she loves quizzes, and she breezed through it with flying colors. We
worked on some more of the suggested vocabulary, which sparked a discussion
about months and seasons.
I then had the idea to draw a circle, divided into
quarters, and have her label them with the names of the seasons, and then write
the months inside the corresponding slices of the year. We decorated the seasons
with suns, snowflakes, etc, and I saw her really finally understanding that
months are INSIDE seasons. It was a perfect “i+1” moment, and I barely helped
her, and just guided her into making her own conclusions about how the calendar
year works. Afterwards, she was pretty mentally worn out and we just read
together until her father came to pick her up. It was definitely the most
productive session we’ve had so far, and it was crazy cool to be there for it.
