I met Rasmane in the CIES basement on February 11th for another tutoring session. He wanted help on his powerpoint presentation--the topic was "my favourite thing" and he wanted to talk about his Louis Vuitton bag. We talked about why he likes it: it's expensive, it's comfortable, and he likes the brand. I explained "brands" and "brand consciousness" to him, using his Nike hat and my HP computer as examples of known brands. Then I showed him how to make new slides and change the designs in powerpoint. Afterwards, I remembered how he liked idioms and slang, so we talked about some examples and when/why we use them. He had collected a few questions: his cousin, for example, replied "yep" when he said "thank you," and Rasmane wanted to know why that was. I told him it was just a way of saying "yep, no problem," or "don't mention it," and his cousin didn't mean anything rude by it. Then he asked about "sinned" (he read it in the bible), "fine/fee," and "(hair) perm," which I had fun explaining to him. Then he wanted to know the use of "therefore" and "most/least likely"--I had a lot of trouble trying to explain "likely" without using the word, and settled on "a high (or low) chance of doing or being something." When I gave examples, I said "gotcha" (slang contraction for "I got you/it") and "going dutch." Rasmane keeps a small diary of new words--which I thought was a great idea--and he was happy to include these phrases. As he asked me for help on his resume, we will work on that next week, for our final tutoring session.
