Tutoring Session #1 (15.01.16)
13:15-14:15
This Friday I had my first tutoring
session with my CIES tutees: HyeJi and Hector. They are both in Group 1C. I
took them to get coffee and on the way there we talked about our what we study
and why each of us goes to CIES. I found out that they had been working on how
to order food in their class that day and offered to pay for their food if they
were willing to order it (even though, honestly, I was going to pay for it
anyways, since it was my idea to take them there).
I asked them what they would like me
to focus on when tutoring, and we determined that it would be most helpful if I
picked out the subjects from their classes that they wanted more attention on,
and work through that subject. Because of this, I decided to observe more Group
1 classes to get an idea of the weekly schedules.
For diagnostics, we read a short
passage about one of the many Native American crow myths, and talked over it.
We a bit of fun going over some vocabulary, because I have a tendency to draw
things I don’t always know how to explain well. Such was the case in describing
a conch shell.
Both students seem to be at about
the same level reading and speaking wise; however, Hector is a little bit shy,
so I have to make sure to pull him back into the conversation sometimes.
Next session, after I get a better
idea of the class structure (I asked them both to email me about any topic they
want me to cover during tutoring sessions) and the weekly topics, I think we
will do a writing assignment.
