After this activity, we read a book about a dog that acquires a floating hat that makes him a wonderful painter. Claire and I both found this book a little strange since it had lots of weird pictures in it that didn't make much sense. The images in the book did not seem appropriate for a child since they were abstract. Although the book was strange, Claire had a fun time reading it. Throughout the book though, Claire mumbles words she does not know. We had to go back and reread a few sentences so that she would pronounce them correctly.

Prior to meeting with Claire, her mother emailed me a journal entry where she lost points because of misused conjunctions. for our first activity, Claire and I went over how and when to use conjunctions. I explained to her that conjunctions are like the glue that holds two sentences together. We then wrote two random sentences and used conjunctions as glue to combine them. For example, we wrote "I like dogs. I like cats." We then rewrote the sentence as I like dogs and cats. We did a few examples like this and then did a similar journal activity that she had done in class, like the one her mother emailed me. I asked Claire which she preferred, dogs or cats, and why. Claire answered this question quickly but made similar mistakes to those she made on her classroom journal activity. These mistakes consisted of simple spell in errors and lack of capitalization or punctuation. I explained to Claire how I often made the same mistakes, but by rereading my work, I could easily correct them. She found this helpful and I am hopeful for her to use it in school.
