TP Session 9 – 2/11/2015
I met
with Young-Seo on Wednesday for our weekly meeting, and had a pretty good
session with her. Her mother told me at the beginning of the meeting that
You-Seo had aced her vocabulary quiz last week. As such, we also began the session
with a bit of vocabulary practice to prepare her for her next vocabulary quiz.
We tore through it quickly, and started working on some higher-level vocabulary
that she had in her school folder. Eventually she became worn out from that,
and we did a bit of reading. Since we had learned about the seasons last week,
I had picked out a book about Fall. She enjoyed it for a while, until
eventually she became bored with this as well. We began talking about the
world, and our countries of origin. She asked me if Denmark or Korea was
bigger, and I honestly didn’t know, so we started looking at world maps on my
phone. She began asking “What’s that?” questions about different places, which
went great until she pointed at North Korea and asked the same question. She
was intensely curious, but I tried to be vague, figuring that was a discussion
that was best for her parents to have with her. All the same, it was kind of a
strange moment, realizing that I had just accidentally introduced this young
Korean girl to the very concept of North Korea. Nonetheless, I liked the World
Map idea. I think what I would like to do next week is help her learn about
different animals that live in different countries, or continents. When I
mentioned lions in Africa, she added monkeys, and seemed extremely enthusiastic
about the subject.
