TP Session 10 - 2/13/2015
I met with Val for the second time
on Friday in the student lounge at CIES. Her main issues have been with
writing, TOEFL writing in particular. We talked a bit about the makeup of the
test, and then went through a mock-run of the TOELF integrated writing portion.
I had found an example online, and administered the test. She was given three
minutes to read a passage. I then read an accompanying text out loud, and gave
her twenty minutes to write her paper. She had not quite finished when time ran
out, but she had made an excellent effort. I plan to grade her paper and give
it back to her at our next meeting. We then talked about different ways to
improve her writing, and in particular, her sentence structure. I suggested
reading more to soak in the sentence structure of other writers. I plan to do
more research to find ways to improve her writing ability.
