Celina_TP #5
For my third tutoring session with Yunseo we made a lot of progress with writing! We started off our session by reading some of her new chapter book, she really flies through about a book a week! This week the chapter book took us on an adventure to the ancient times in the Middle East. The vocabulary in this novel seemed to be getting trickier than the last novels. She stumbled upon a few longer words, so I had her re-read them and spell them out and take a guess at what they might mean. This seems to work rather effectively with her reading comprehension skills. After she read half of the chapter I promised her I would read the second half. As I read I would stop and ask her some questions about what was happening in the story, to test some comprehension and to keep her attention as well. After we read for a little, we started to work on her story writing again. We used the same strategy as last session where we went through the chapter we had just read and took some of the words she had stumbled with and wrote them on slips of paper. Then she chose three slips of paper and I told her to write sentences containing those new words. She wanted to continue writing her story about her monster "Furry" which I agreed would be a good way of making the writing activity more fun. She learned how to use new words like speckled, mysterious, and scowled and how to properly use them in writing.
I really enjoy using this method because it helps her see these new words more than once and put them into not only the context she read them in, but also in her writing context.
Next session however I think we are going to have to do a timed writing activity because I think her writing can be done at a much quicker pace and its important for her to learn this skill!
