Today when I met Youngseo in the library she greeted me with a pink carnation and shouted “Happy Valentine’s day!” She is so cute and it’s always fun to tutor her! She explained to me that it was ‘so exhausting’ giving out all her Valentine’s day cards, which was too cute. We generally do a lot of reading and writing practice, but today I wanted to work on her speech, since her words sometimes get jumbled up when she’s excited.

I told her I was going to interview her, which seemed to interest her. I asked her things like “if you could be any animal, what would you be? what is your favorite thing to do with your mom? what do you want to be when you grow up?” the answers to these, respectively were “an elephant, going to disney world, and a singer”. We talked about a lot of other things as well, and asking these questions was a good way to stimulate conversation. Whenever she made a major grammar mistake I would correct her, write it down on the white board, and then have her repeat it. It seems like she really liked answering the questions so I think I’ll do it again.

After the questions, we did a little coloring, while she was still speaking. Then, we moved on to reading. I let her pick out a book from the library and she then read most of it to me. I am always careful to correct her if she skips over a word, but she’s getting better at reading everything. I also work with her on the “th” sound a lot. Her dad asked me how many more sessions we would have and I told them I would be happy to continue tutoring Youngseo for the rest of the semester, if they would like. I’m really excited that they want me to keep tutoring her, and that I get to keep working with her.
