I picked up Kaori from her house and took her to my workplace to eat and have our tutoring session. She loves American food so I made sure she got a big burger and fries (she freaked out, lol). We were hidden away in a booth and got to (kind of) work in peace. One of my acquaintances popped in and wouldn't stop talking to us--Kaori seemed extremely annoyed and asked "Is he what I would call rude?" I said yes, but told her not to say it to someone directly. We talked a lot about how Americans are very loud/talkative but mean to be friendly.
Anyway, for our actual tutoring/homework portion we worked on directions and how to places from CIES. We discussed directions to Hollister (her favorite store), Starbucks, and then to her apartment complex. I used a few terms/phrases she wasn't familiar with like "stay on," "go for two blocks," and "sharp turn." I was super specific with the first set of directions, but then we chose easier places to navigate to.
We finished our tutoring session, and then her boyfriend picked her up from the restaurant. One hilarious thing that happened--I asked Kaori about her boyfriend, she said "he's not very handsome." I laughed and said "why would you say that," and then she said "oh it's okay, he knows."

  1. Hahah, what a great story, that's hilarious! Seems like you guys had a good tutoring session though. I like the idea with specific phrases--I guess I never though of "stay on" and "sharp turn" as serious vocab words, since we use them everyday. Good to know next time I meet my tutee.
