Katelyn_TP_#14

On February 17th, I accompanied Zoe to observe her tutoring session with Rena, who is the younger sister of my tutee. Rena was immediately excitable, but was able to focus on her reading comprehension, which we got right into. The first exercise was to sound out words for consonants (2-3 claps, etc.). During the reading comprehension, Zoe gave excellent vocal feedback, saying things like “that was a big word, good job pronouncing it.” Zoe also helped her figure it out rather than telling her the answer. Next, they made corrections to sentences, and Zoe had Rena read the sentences both out loud in order to choose which sounds the most correct. I thought this was a good idea, as it helped her to realize which sentences sound awkward. Then they played the dice game, which I loved, and will definitely try in the future with EFL children. It was randomly rolled, 15 times each, and the 1-6 sides had a certain amount appointed to their value (1 – 1c, 2 – 5c, etc.). This taught Rena not only the names/words for money, but its value, and it was a great math practice. She did another reading comprehension check, about a cat named "Precious Jones," and then she insisted on (speed-)reading TWO books out loud to us. Although she rushed through the books, she didn't stumble on the words or grammar, which surprised me. Overall, Rena was hilarious and energetic, she was very easy and well behaved. I was impressed by how Zoe kept Rena focused, but also made the lesson fun.
