On Saturday, February 16th, I had my first tutoring session with a CIES foundations student, Angelica. She was very nice, and seems very motivated to learn english. She told me that her husband is studying here, and that she is a professor at a University in Chile.
Angelica told me that she wanted to work on the verbs to go, to have, and to be. She told me that the easiest way for her to learn would be for me to ask her sentences using these verbs in the form of a question, and she would answer them using the correct verb form. As we progressed, she seemed to be getting a better grasp on how to use these verbs. Whenever she had difficulty I would stop and explain to her when each form of the verb was used. Because I speak some spanish, it was easy for me to help explain things to Angelica that she did not understand. We were able to communicate efficiently throughout the session, because Angelica would translate things on her computer when she had questions.
Angelica had a surprising level of english for a foundations student. She is very motivated and I feel that this alone will allow her to advance quickly. Now that I know Angelica's level of english and what she would like to work on, I think that I will bring grammar worksheets and use online activities to help her grasp these concepts.
