For my third classroom observation I got to sit in on Ryan's level 2 Composition class. The class started with Ryan handing back the drafts of the students papers. The prompt for the essay was to explain an aspect of their cultures or to explain an American culture that they had experienced.
After each student had their drafts back, Ryan dismissed the class to the computer lab. The students were to begin typing up their final drafts on the computers and utilize the class time to seek help from the teacher. Ryan let me look over the rubric he grades by (same one we were given in class) and told me what he grades on each draft. The first draft he usually just edits simple grammar mistakes and focuses on content.
The computer lab at CIES has a really cool program that lets the teachers computer control all of the students computers. The program allows for the teacher to view what each student is working on (or not working on) and can even help them edit papers. It also allows for the teacher to pause the screens of the students and make presentations on their screens. Ryan utilized this program to help students fix some of the errors on their papers. Mid-way through the session, the students and Ryan went over formatting the correct way. Ryan explained to the students how their papers should have one single font, how they should be double spaced, and how it should have a title and name on it.
Overall, I think this was a really interesting class to sit in on because I got to observe the ways a TEFL teacher is supposed to edit and grade writing assignments.
