My second tutoring session with my CIES student, Angelica, was on Monday January 19th. We met at the Starbucks on Tennessee Street instead of the library this time. Angelica was very easy to work with, and she had even struck up a conversation in English with someone in Starbucks before I arrived. She still seems very eager to learn the language.
Angelica had brought some of her work from her classes to work on. This included using sentences with the verbs to have, to be, and to go like we worked on last time. I could tell that she had been practicing, because she seemed to have improved a lot since the last time we met. We used an online worksheet to review these concepts, and when she was done I explained her mistakes. She seemed to understand what I was explaining and was able to apply her corrections to more sentences. After this, we reviewed stories that she had for her class, and she created lists of vocabulary words that she did not understand. I explained these words to her, and she wrote them in a sentence using the proper context.
Angelica seems to be making really good progress in her classes even though she has only been here for a short amount of time. She is very easy to tutor, and brings classwork with her to our sessions. I think that if Angelica keeps up with her work she will definitely be able to advance to the next level in CIES school.
