I met again with Shuo. She had a homework assignment in which she was required to listen to a TED talk and write a summary. I decided to help her try to choose a TED talk and the one that sprung to mind was one by the actress Thandie Newton, which addresses the issue of race. I wanted Shuo to consider this talk because she has so many questions about race. After listening to the talk, I asked her to give me a summary of it, but I could tell that most of it was beyond her English skill level. The talk is a little philosophical. She was more interested in if I found Thandie Newton to be pretty or not. I then gave her some ideas about honing on a TED talk that would benefit her, perhaps something about marketing, which is her major.

We then had a naturally flowing conversation in which I somehow ended up explaining Christianity to her (especially the creation myth of Adam and Eve) and the difference between Protestantism and Catholicism. I am not religious myself, but I felt she need to know about Christianity because it is so important to Western civilization. I don't remember how we ended up talking about it. We also ended up talking about the US political system and the two major parties.
