Meredith TP #1

My first tutoring session with PJ was on January 10th. We took a little while to talk so he would feel more comfortable with me. We talked about his birthday, his trip to Hawaii, and when he broke his foot. Then we started the first half of a chapter book his teacher gave him called December Dog. He does not like to read that much, so getting him engrossed in the book was a challenge. I would test him at the end of every couple pages and the end of every chapter to see if he had been paying attention- and often he had not- even when he was reading it. He was only reading the words and not reading for comprehension. I think the biggest challenge with PJ is going to be getting him to appreciate reading.

  1. Meredith, it sounds like your first session went will aside from reading with PJ. I'm sure you could find activities for him that will make it a little more fun. When I read with my TP, I read 1 page, then she read 2, this kept her engrossed in the book, but I think she likes reading more than PJ seems to. Maybe you could have PJ draw what is going on in the story to keep him entertained?

  2. Meredith, why don't you come up with a schema building activity and interesting discussion questions for each of your tutoring session?
Also, I think it will be a good idea for you to observe Damil's TP session with PJ sometime soon.
