I held my first tutoring session with my child tutee over Skype. I was actually very nervous about beginning the session! I didn't think I had enough prepared and was worried my child tutee would get bored and distracted. I began the session by asking Jun some simple questions about himself. Like, what he liked to do outside of school, what his favorite subjects in school were, and some activities he liked to do with his friends on the weekend. His speaking level was very proficient and I had no difficulties understanding him. However, he did not seem to elaborate much on his answers. He would answer with just short responses very quickly, and then I would have to ask more about what he answered. I learned that he really enjoyed painting and wanted to become an artist one day, which was very inspiring to hear from a third grader. After chatting for a little while about his vacation and playing in the snow, I asked Jun to read a passage I had found on an online ESL resource website. It was a bit of a weird passage about a woman's cat dying, but I think Jun found it funny. He tended to read very quickly, which I feel was a way of avoiding difficult words he needed to pronounce. After the reading we went over a set of questions together about the reading and did an activity where we used a word bank to finish sentences. We utilized the present tense and the past tense to talk about the reading passage.
Overall, I think the session went fairly well. We did not go for a full hour because his mother was worried he would get bored, but I think the time we did get to work was very productive. I wish that I had prepared more activities rather than just having two reading passages with questions to go over. I think I need to work more on preparing better.
