On Wednesday I had my second tutoring session with Youngseo. It went really well, better than the first session. Her mom brought materials from Youngseo’s class at school for us to work on. She explained that she needed to know all the months and told me she wanted us to work on handouts with vocabulary words. I had Youngseo pick out words from the vocabulary list that she knew and use them for me in a sentence. Then I explained to her the ones she didn’t know.

Sometimes it was a bit tricky to explain these words. I had to remind myself to use the most basic definitions I could, because otherwise she would become confused. For example, she didn’t know what “proud” meant and I told her it’s “when you feel good about yourself because you did something good”. I also gave her simple scenarios relevant to her life, to explain the definitions. I told her she would be proud if she cleaned her whole room, or if she knew all her vocabulary words.

After we did the vocabulary words, I had her list off all the months in order, which she did really well. I also asked her what things she did in certain months, like Halloween in October. I think doing this kind of thing helps her to have more fun and keep it a little more interesting. After this, she told me she wanted to write so I made up some fill in the blank practice questions. For example, I wrote “Minnie Mouse _____ at Disney World” and she wrote “works”.

Toward the end of the session I could tell she was having a harder time paying attention, so I told her if she could finish a few reading passages we could color. As we did each paragraph I had her color something from it. So for example, in the first paragraph she read about Belle reading and then she colored a picture of a book. At the end of this session I talked to her mom some more and suggested that she practice the “th” sound at home. It was good talking to her mom and overall I was really happy with the session.
