I met Yunseo on Friday afternoon around 4pm. She is an adorable 5 year old from South Korea and is in Kindergarten. We met after she got out of school, so I think she might have been a little tired of "learning" as she likes to call it. Her favorite color is blue and she has an entire box filled with pencils that she carries around with her. She is a wonderful reader, definitely ahead of her grade/age. Her parents told me that they wanted me to work with her mainly on her writing skills, but also a little bit of reading. She only has a little bit of an accent when she speaks, but it also could be because she is so young. When Yunseo writes, she is very careful and slow and meticulously corrects her letters if they don't connect or are too far apart or too big. When she writes everything has to be perfect, and because of this she is pretty slow at writing. To improve this, I did a couple writing activities with her. First, I had her read a page of a book she brought with her (Magic Tree House) and then write three sentences about what she thought would happen later in the story. Next I read three sentences from the next page and read them to her, while she wrote down what I said. This helped her work on listening and writing. Finally, I put a timer on for two minutes and had her write as many sentences from the next page of her book as she could. I emphasized how she should try to write as quick as possible to get many words written. She got 16 words, and next time we meet we can do it again to see how many she gets and hopefully she will improve.
