I had my first tutoring session with my adult tutee on Monday. Her name is Maria and she is from Columbia. We met at Starbucks and mostly talked so that I could get an understanding of her conversational level. She told me about growing up in Columbia, the town she is from, her cat, her interests, her job, and traditional Columbian food. She spoke pretty good English. There were some grammar mistakes and sometimes she had trouble explaining what she wanted to say, but overall I could understand her well and her accent did not hinder her English. I also had her read a passage out loud and then asked her which words she didn’t know, to gage her reading level.

I asked her if she had had a tutor in the past or if there were any things in particular that I should do to help her, but she said there was no particular teaching style that she needed. When I asked her what she wanted to focus on she told me that she needed help with verb tenses. For the next session, I will bring some handouts and examples with all the verb tenses and have her write some sentences on her own using the different tenses. Overall it went well and I am glad that we had the first session to get to know each other. Maria seems like she really wants to improve her English.
