Feedback provided to tutee: Helped correct grammar and style mistakes for an assigned presentation
Lesson:
I met again with Shuo, this time at her apartment complex's study room. Last time we had brainstormed ideas for her presentation and this session we went over what she had written for it. She is at an advanced level, so there were only a few grammar mistakes that need correcting. I helped her with quite a bit of style problems, though. Her English was written awkwardly, and formal to the point of being inappropriate for this assignment, which was a casual introduction of her self and a discussion of where she was from. I helped her tone down the formality just a bit and also gave her some advice in her writing that would make her English sound more natural/native. We also worked a lot on pronunciation, because this presentation will be giving orally. She had a hard time with the word "ancient" and we worked on her pronouncing "the" with a "z" or "s" sound at the beginning. She seemed confused by how English speaker say either "thee" or "thuh" for "the", I told her to not worry about this and say it either way, but that she should concentrate on forming the "th" sound and avoid using "s" or "z" at the beginning of the word.
I made her read the composition out loud 5 times, because Shuo is a very shy person and is very anxious about how she sounds when speaking English.
Shuo brought me some food she had made and it was delicious! There were two dishes, one beef and one pork that had 2 sorts of vegetables I had never had. We had a texting conversation after I got home about the meal she had made. It was very nice of her.
