On Tuesday I observed Candace’s Grammar 3B group. I found Candace’s teaching style to be very straightforward and clear, and she had maintained a friendly and calm attitude with her students. She started the class by putting a “bell ringer” on the board in which students had to re-read a passage about recycling that they had previously read at home. She told them to jot down the main points.

After that, Candace reviewed the simple past with students and had them work in small groups, talking about the reason for choosing their major and what they did when they were children. It seemed that the students in this group had a better understanding of grammar than the advanced foundations group I had previously observed, but they were more reserved and quiet when speaking out loud. Candace also had students pick out simple past verbs from the recycling article and say whether they were regular or irregular.

After reviewing and using the simple past, Candace moved on to the present perfect. She had a few sentences expressing the same thought and asked students to choose which one was incorrectly using the verb tense. She also drew a timeline on the board to show students how a simple past verb is finished in the past and a present perfect goes from the past to now. To further explain the present perfect she had students write a pretend resumé. As students wrote, she went around the table to help and correct them. I liked Candace’s teach style because she was very clear when communicating with her students and interacted with them a lot, making sure that every student participated.
