Colin_TP_#1

Today I met with my tutoring partner for the first time. She is a young, 6 and half year old South Korean girl named Claire. I was greeted by Claire's mother while Claire was practicing her violin. During our first activity we drew pictures of our favorite foods, animals, toys, and colors. Claire's were mac n cheese, owls, a science kit, and blue. After drawing we read Claire's AR book together. The book was about a spanish cockroach looking for a husband. For Claire's age she spoke english very well only having problems with larger words. In the book, many spanish words were used such as abuelo, seƱor, and hola. The spanish words made the book harder for Claire to understand, but other than that, we both enjoyed the story and Claire understood it very well. Once we finished reading, the two of us did an activity together. Claire cut out 8 adjectives and 8 nouns from a worksheet that I provided. We then randomly put the adjectives and nouns together to make silly pairings such as smelly octopus, jolly shoes, and hairy hotels. Once we made all the pairings we each drew pictures of them.

Claire spoke better than I thought she would and knew more vocabulary too. She sometimes skips over small words in sentences like "a" and when there is a large word she doesn't understand she mispronounces it and moves on. We reread each sentence where Claire struggled with words in order to help her better pronounce and understand what they meant. Claire was very energetic and excited to read with me and I am looking forward to our next visit!
